Frequently Asked Questions:


 

Simply bring your child(ren) down 10 minutes before the start of any class.

There is nothing to pay, but a parent/guardian will be required to sign an insurance waiver, and we'll lend them a clean uniform for the class too.


 

Firstly, we don't believe that kids under 8 years old can realistically grasp Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Other clubs that teach kids younger than 8, are essentially showing them basic gymnastics.

Therefore, we have two age groups - 8 to 11 and then 12+.

But there is a very thick grey line there as all kids develop at different speeds. So a large 11 year old who has been training for 3 years may dominate a small, frail 12 year old. So if your child is around 12 years old, you can let them trial both groups and see which one they feel more comfortable in.


 

Depending on the time of year, we have between 2 and 4 classes per week. This is because with kids having so many things on, for example footy in winter, then we add or remove classes as the seasons change.

On top of this, we also do not do contracts for kids - if enquring at other schools, make sure you ask about contracts.

At SCJJA you can pay by the class, or by the month, whichever is more convienient for you at the time (ie, with footy training, swimming lessions etc... you may do different options throughout the year)

Do you know a child who's being bullied?

I do. Plus, I used to be one. Which is why I’m passionate about fixing it with peace through strength (a.k.a self-confidence that comes from within).

In my first year of high school, I lost my best childhood friend to drugs. This did two things - made me swear to never take an illegal drug, and made me lonely - a perfect target for bullies.

Luckily, I was introduced to jiu-jitsu. My instructor Gordon Griffiths taught at the Sylvania Heights Youth Centre and spent 5 years watching me lose every single fight in every single tournament.

But he believed in me and knew how to develop me. And I didn’t quit.

I ended up moving to Rio de Janeiro Brazil, becoming the 11th Australian to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And soon thereafter I won every major grappling tournament in Australasia.

Now after retiring from competition, I’ve turned my attention to teaching.

I’m not interested in taking the cream of athletes from other sports or martial arts schools. I want to develop life-long relationships with kids who are getting pushed around, just like what used to happen to me.

At Southern Cross Jiu-Jitsu Academy, I’m building a legacy. A safe place for kids to come after school and to learn and grow.

Jiu-Jitsu changed me from a wimp to a winner, and I’ve done it with other kids who have come through already. And I want to keep doing it, for the rest of my life.
